GSM Explained: Why Fabric Weight is the Most Important Thing Nobody Talks About

GSM stands for Grams per Square Metre. It is the standard measurement for fabric weight, and it tells you more about a piece of clothing than the brand name ever will. Understanding GSM will completely change how you shop for clothes.

What Does GSM Actually Mean?

Simply put, GSM measures how much a one-square-metre piece of fabric weighs in grams. A higher GSM means a heavier, denser, thicker fabric. A lower GSM means lighter and more breathable. It is not just about warmth — it is about durability, structure, feel, and how the garment hangs on your body.

GSM Ranges and What They Mean

100–150 GSM: Very lightweight. Think summer t-shirts and casual innerwear. These breathe well but do not last long with heavy use.

160–200 GSM: Standard t-shirt weight. Most mass-market clothing falls here. Decent comfort but lacks structure and premium feel.

200–260 GSM: Medium weight. Good quality sweatshirts and mid-layer pieces. Holds shape better and feels more substantial.

300–400 GSM: Heavyweight. This is the premium range for hoodies, sweatshirts, and fleece. 320 GSM is considered the sweet spot — thick enough for real warmth, structured enough for a clean silhouette, and durable enough to last years with proper care.

Why 320 GSM is the Gold Standard for Hoodies

At Chahatein, we use 320 GSM 100% ring-spun cotton fleece for our hoodies and sweatshirts. Ring-spun cotton is made by twisting and thinning the cotton fibres to create a smoother, stronger yarn. This means the fabric is softer to touch, more durable under stress, and dyes more evenly — which is why our garment-dyed pieces have that deep, rich colour that holds wash after wash.

How to Check GSM When Shopping

Most brands do not advertise GSM. Here are quick ways to check: hold the fabric up to light — if you can see your hand through it, it is lightweight. Give it a scrunch — premium fabric bounces back immediately. Check the label for fabric composition — 100% cotton at 320 GSM will feel completely different to a cotton-polyester blend at the same weight.

Next time you shop, ask about GSM. It is the one number that separates genuinely premium clothing from everything else.
