Cotton vs Fleece vs Linen: The Complete Fabric Guide for Every Season

Most people choose clothes based on colour, fit, and price — but the single most important factor in how a garment performs is the fabric. Understanding fabric will help you buy better, dress smarter, and get far more out of every piece you own.

Cotton: The All-Season Foundation

Cotton is the most versatile natural fibre in existence. It breathes well in heat, holds warmth when layered in cold, and gets softer with every wash. For everyday wear, look for ring-spun or combed cotton — both processes refine the cotton fibres to create a smoother, more durable yarn compared to standard open-end spun cotton.

Not all cotton is the same. The weight (GSM) determines its use: 160–180 GSM for summer tees, 240–280 GSM for sweatshirts, and 300–360 GSM for heavyweight hoodies and fleece pieces. At Chahatein, our core collection is built on 320 GSM ring-spun cotton fleece — the ideal weight for Pakistani winters.

Fleece: The Winter Essential

Cotton fleece is cotton that has been brushed on one or both sides to create a soft, napped surface that traps warm air. It is not synthetic fleece (which is polyester) — cotton fleece breathes, is hypoallergenic, and gets more comfortable over time. The inside of a quality hoodie has that characteristic soft, loopy texture — that is the fleece.

When buying fleece pieces, check the GSM and composition. 100% cotton fleece at 320 GSM is premium. A cotton-polyester blend may feel similar at first but pills (develops small fabric balls) faster and does not breathe as well. Polyester retains odour, while cotton does not.

Linen: The Summer Champion

Linen comes from the flax plant and is the most breathable natural fabric available. It absorbs moisture and releases it quickly, meaning it keeps you cool even in high humidity. Linen also has a natural texture that looks casually elegant — a linen shirt in white or beige looks effortlessly put-together without trying.

Linen wrinkles easily, which many people see as a flaw. But slight wrinkling in linen is actually a hallmark of the fabric — embrace it. It is part of the aesthetic. Avoid heavy starching or over-pressing linen; let it breathe and move naturally.

Which to Choose?

Summer: Lightweight cotton (160–180 GSM) or linen. Monsoon and transitional: Mid-weight cotton (200–260 GSM). Winter: Cotton fleece at 300–360 GSM. For year-round wardrobe building, start with cotton — it is the most versatile investment you can make.
